Spanish has many variants and dialects. The versions spoken in Mexico show inflluence of the ethnic groups they are closest to geographically. Within Mexico dozens of indigenous languages are still spoken. In Spain itself, there are three "official" Romance languages -- castellano, gallego, and catalan, but there are local variants of each of these. The fourth offical language of Spain -- Basque or Euskera -- has many variants because the towns are so isolated by mountain ranges.
